Can I Induce Labour with Herbs?

by Sally
(Canberra)

I want a natural birth without interventions but I am already 40 weeks and my OB wants to induce me. I've heard that there are herbs that can bring on labour. Do you know what they are?

Hi Sally,

Thanks for your question. As it happens I recently wrote an article about this very topic and you'll find it here.

Essentially, the answer is "yes" you can have a herbal induction of labour, but my recommendation is that you don't. Herbs can sometimes work more effectively than a chemical induction - prompting "tetanic" contractions (stronger and more painful than normal) - and as I subscribe to a natural birth, and letting nature take its course, I don't feel that it is my place to recommend which herbs to use.

If you feel that you must use herbs to induce your labour, please see a qualified herbalist or naturopath. There are many in Canberra - you might try The Heirophant in Griffith as a starting point.

I also have another article called, "If you go overdue, what should you do?" and it can be found here.
