If you are one of the hundreds of women in Australia who want a natural, un-medicated vaginal birth yet you have had at least one caesarean birth before then you are often faced with a struggle to get the care you desire. Vaginal Birth After Caesarean (VBAC) is its name and the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that if you are a healthy pregnant mother, carrying a healthy child then you should attempt to birth your baby vaginally as the risks of repeat caesarean are higher than that of a vaginal birth. However, in Canberra, although there are hospitals here who will allow VBAC under certain circumstances they may have some very restrictive policies which make it difficult for the labouring mother to achieve the kind of birth she desires. ASK YOUR OBSTETRICIAN about continuous monitoring, whether you can assume any labour position you like (not possible with continuous monitoring) and how long will they allow you to go "overdue" before they will insist you take the caesarean route. Please do your due diligence. The hospitals in Canberra are only trying to cover themselves in the event that they must care for an un-informed VBAC labouring mother. If you demonstrate your extensive VBAC knowledge and exercise your rights you may well get the birth you're after!!

Six weeks after birth, mothers who had doulas were**:

A natural birth process was definitely on the forefront of our minds but we were not sure if we could do it in a peaceful, gentle way as the 'conventional way' with medical intervention was drummed into us. There is no doubt that painful birth has been the experience of millions of women. So prevalent in our society is this concept, that it is a given that birth must be an excruciating ordeal. Women who have had painless births are dismissed as liars or delusional 'naturalists' in books like Misconceptions by Naomi Wolfe. I've heard young mothers-to-be exclaim, "I just couldn't do it without the epidural!" and "I don't want to feel a single thing!" because they have so much fear over the pain that they assume must be inherent in birth. Let them cling to the notion that suffering and birthing are two sides of the same coin. I want to explore the possibility of painless birth... without drugs. Wait! I'm not crazy! Years ago when I first read about painless birth my reaction was also "Yeah, right!" but I've changed my beliefs regarding birth and pain.
