I am expecting a Baby. What do I get in the HypnoBirthing classes?

The HypnoBirthing childbirth education course is 12.5 hours long and taught over 5 weeks with a workbook, laminated tools and take-home materials. In the case of the Weekend Intensive classes, the same materials and course will be presented, just over a two day period instead of 5 weeks.

The HypnoBirthing classes are structured to teach you about the physical and emotional aspects of childbirth. They are are informal and relaxed and you will learn what other antenatal classes do not cover or teach.

It provides YOU with a special time to connect with Yourself, Your Baby and Your Birth to bring about the calm and gentle birthing you desire. We encourage full support of your Birthing Companion (your husband, the baby's father, your doula, etc).

When Should I start?

Essentially, the more time you have to practice the methods the better as there is a lot to cover. Starting anytime is fine however, the earlier in your pregnancy the better.

The HypnoBirthing Institute suggests starting the course by roughly week 13 in your Second Trimester, as you can only benefit from the increased time to practice before birth. However, if you are already in your third trimester this is still okay! Just be aware that the need for serious, diligent practice is far greater!

Types of HypnoBirthing Classes

All Classes include access to phone or email support from us if you feel the need.

Group Classes are held on Tuesday evenings, Wednesday evenings or Saturday mornings & afternoons for the duration.

Private Classes, are available at a mutually convenient time and venue, and you can also schedule an optional follow up or refresher for one hour when you come close to your birthing day.

A quick note about the Intensive classes...
Intensive study sounds attractive to some because they can get it over with more quickly however, there is a serious side to it. By taking the course intensively, there is a far greater chance that you will 'zone out' and miss much of the important information because there is so much presented in such a short time. Remember, you ARE pregnant, and for many pregnant women it is quite challenging to stay focused for such a long period of time! In addition you don't get the benefit of practicing each week, as the other classes do, and therefore you won't have so many chances to ask questions, check your techniques, and gain in confidence that the benefit of time truly allows.

Bear in mind that while we can "de-hypnotise" you from any current birth-related negative thinking, like most complementary modalities such as massage and herbal medicine, hypnosis can take time, repeated sessions, effort and commitment to make a strong and obvious difference in a person's life. This is what makes the 5 week course so powerful and effective!

Although we are happy to take any new enrollment, the best candidates for the Intensive classes are those who are coming from far away (they usually have to take up accommodation in Canberra for the weekend) and those who have just stumbled across HypnoBirthing late in their pregnancy and maybe don't have enough weeks in their pregnancy left to complete a full course.

What do I do if I don't have a birth companion?

Sometimes partners choose not to be at the birth, and not all birthing women have partners. This in no way excludes you from experiencing the benefits of HypnoBirthing.

If this is the case, I do suggest that you explore the possibility of having a birth support person. This can be in the form of friend, family member, or a doula (a Professional Birth Support Person) I have listed the names of some wonderful doulas in the birth links section of this website.

Research has shown that the presence of a doula or support person, can reduce the length of labour significantly, and minimise the need for intervention and medication. I am happy for you to invite any birth support person or doula along to the HypnoBirthing classes so they can understand what it is you are doing and how they can be of support.

Will HypnoBirthing work for me?

HypnoBirthing classes offer a model of education that leads to a much greater understanding of your own inner resources, and what you can bring to the birth of your baby. When you complete the program you and your partner will have an excellent working knowledge, new skills and tools that give you a much greater confidence in handling the very diverse nature of labour and birth, and with continued practice at home you make the most of your learning.

HypnoBirthing is about the powerful abilities of your mind to influence the outcome of your birthing. By learning self-control over your mind and subsequently your body's actions, you have the ability to make your birthing more comfortable, easier and a thoroughly enjoyable experience instead of one fraught with worry, anxiety and pain.

I have never heard a couple say that they have not benefited in some way - even couples who ended up having an emergency caesarean section have said how their HypnoBirthing practice helped them greatly in working throughout their labour. In fact, couples are mostly amazed at how HypnoBirthing made such a big difference on their birthing day.
