What is Hypnosis?
There are a lot of misconceptions about what is hypnosis and what is "mind control". In self-hypnosis, you are fully aware of your surroundings and you are fully in control of yourself. In mind control, you're not. What is Hypnosis? The state of hypnosis and self-hypnosis is a very natural, focussed and relaxed state. Without realising it you will have often experienced this state. Have you ever driven from one place to another and upon arriving there not really remembered the drive? Have you ever been engrossed in a fire, a book or a movie? These are all states of self-hypnosis.Hypnosis is a deeply relaxed state of body and a normal, natural healthy state of mind. You are aware and in control. It happens spontaneously during the day when you daydream and just before going to sleep. In hypnosis, positive and empowering suggestions are more easily accepted and acted upon. Hypnosis is not a magic wand, but a tool to help you achieve your goals with your mind working for you. Is Hypnosis safe? You won't be made to cluck like a chicken! You will not do anything against your will – you are in control. Hypnosis is a natural state that people go in and out of everyday. It is as safe as daydreaming. You only accept the suggestions that you want to accept. People who participate in stage show hypnosis are actually aware of what they are doing and consent to doing it. To really know what is hypnosis and what it is not, the answer comes down to whether you feel like you're in control of your actions or not. If you feel like you're in control, yet you choose to do the actions of your practitioner anyway, then this is hypnosis.Who can be hypnotised?Virtually anyone can be hypnotised, but what you need to know is that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. If someone is "hypnotising" you, they are simply guiding you into a natural hypnotic state. Some people are more easily able to achieve hypnosis than others. A person goes into hypnosis because they choose to and no one can be hypnotised against his or her will. What it comes down to is, clients who are strongly committed to reaching their desired birthing outcome achieve the best results with HypnoBirthing. In addition, the more you practise your HypnoBirthing techniques, the more easily you can slip into this wonderful relaxed state. As always, the more you practice the better you become. A hypnotherapist is a only guide who knows how to get there and how to use it most effectively. What does hypnosis feel like?A very relaxing, and peaceful state of mind. Fully concious but totally relaxed. You may also experience feelings of comfort, well-being and perhaps drowsiness. Other feelings such as sinking, floating or heaviness depend on the person and depth of state. You are always conscious and aware – the concentration of your mind is greatly enhanced. Because you are so aware, you may not realise that you are in hypnosis. When you awaken, there are definite signs to confirm that you have been in a hypnotic state. Why is self-hypnosis and relaxation important to birthing? The body and mind work at their best when they relaxed and free of tension. When having your baby with HypnoBirthing, what you will experience is similar to the daydreaming or focussing that occurs when you are engrossed in a book or starting at a fire. You will be conversant and in good spirits – totally relaxed, but fully in control. You will be aware of your body’s contractions, but will be able to determine the extent to which you feel the surge. You will experience your birthing in an atmosphere of calm and relaxation, without the fear and tension that cause pain. Your body’s natural anaesthesia (endorphins) will replace the stress hormones that cause pain. When it is time for your baby to be born, you will be fully awake and involved. I hope this clears up your questions about what is hypnosis!
